This nostalgic district sets the perfect background for the movie “Dust in the Wind”(戀戀風塵). Tourists flock to this area for the unique atmosphere, where rail tracks lie in the middle of the road without fences, and people walk right next to passing trains.
Pingxi Old Street ( 平溪老街 ) and the sky lanterns are increasingly popular, and the number of tourists has rocketed. Despite only a few hundred meters long, the architecture presents decades of history— from the 1930s, 1940s, and Japanese occupation period. You can make the trip more fun by crossing the railway and go straight to Guan Yin Yan( 觀音巖 ).
Sky Lanterns Police Station (天燈派出所 ) lights up the night! The 9-meter tall police precinct in Pingxi ( 平溪 ), with a unique sky-lantern shaped glass panel, is a composite service center that also provides tourist information.

Shifen Waterfall ( 十分瀑布 ) is Taiwan's largest cascade falls, nicknamed the Niagara Falls of Taiwan, splashing white silky patterns as it descends.

Getting there: Take Taipei Bus 795 to the Shifen Scenic Area administrative office, or take train to Shifen Station and walk along old street to Shifen Waterfall.
Lingjiao Station ( 嶺腳車站 ) used to be a bustling hub for three mining sites in the old days. Crisscrossing railways, streets and the creeks make a picturesque landscape. Now a sleepy town as mining industry declined, Lingjiao ( 嶺腳 ) yet maintains a wonderful destination for getaway daytrips for its convenient location.
This latest trail in Pingxi area of New Taipei City is perfect for family and couples. There are side tracks to Wanggu waterfalls ( 望古瀑布 ), where the splash of water curtains make heavenly tunes echoing in the tranquil woods. The trail is close to Wang-gu Station on the Jing-tong line.
